Best cheap motorcycle insurance: Dairyland
Dairyland has the best motorcycle insurance rates in the country.
On average, policies cost $22 per month, with rates as low as $14 per month in some states. That makes Dairyland a great choice for low-cost motorcycle insurance.
Dairyland customers can add on roadside assistance and rental reimbursement coverage at an extra cost. These coverages make it a great choice for riders who use their motorcycle as their main vehicle.
- Emergency roadside assistance includes service for flat tires, bad batteries, mechanical or electrical problems, fuel, fluid, oil or water refills and tow service.
- Rental reimbursement helps cover the cost of a rental vehicle while your motorcycle is in the shop after a crash. This is an important coverage to have if you ride your bike to get to work or for everyday activities.
In addition, Dairyland will pay to fully restore or replace your motorcycle after a crash without accounting for wear and tear, called replacement cost coverage, if it's less than three years old. Many other companies have a mileage limit or set a one-year cap on full replacement coverage.
Riders aren't thrilled with the service they get from Dairyland, though. It gets 60% more complaints than an average insurance company its size, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). If you're in an accident, it may take longer to settle your claim with Dairyland compared to other companies.
Best motorcycle insurance for most people: Progressive
Progressive has the best motorcycle insurance for most people. It offers extra coverage and reliable customer service at an affordable rate. A full coverage policy from Progressive costs around $23 per month. That's $10 per month cheaper than average.
All of Progressive's motorcycle insurance policies will pay to fully restore your motorcycle without a deduction for wear and tear, called full replacement cost coverage.
Progressive also offers original equipment manufacturer (OEM) coverage. It will replace any original or custom parts on your bike with the same parts.
Progressive also includes $3,000 of coverage for damage to custom parts, upgrades and customizations when you get collision and comprehensive coverage. And you can pay extra to raise the limit up to $30,000 if needed.
In addition, Progressive gets 35% fewer complaints compared to an average company of the same size, according to the NAIC. That means riders are typically happy with the service they get from Progressive.
However, Progressive doesn't offer rental reimbursement coverage for motorcycles. You may want this coverage if you don't have another vehicle or if you ride your bike every day.
Best company for motorcycle insurance discounts: Harley-Davidson
The Harley Davidson insurance company offers lots of ways for riders to save on its already affordable motorcycle insurance.
Full-coverage Harley-Davidson motorcycle insurance costs just $24 per month, on average. That's $9 per month cheaper than the national average, making it one of the most affordable motorcycle insurance options available. In addition, it offers 13 discounts to help you lower your motorcycle insurance rates.
Harley-Davidson motorcycle insurance discounts
- Anti-theft discount for riders who install an audible alarm or LoJack system on their bike
- Bundled protection discount if you buy multiple insurance products from Harley-Davidson , like a planned maintenance policy
- Claim-free renewal discount if you avoided making a claim during the last policy period
- Experienced rider discount based on the number of years you've had a motorcycle license
- H-D Riding Academy discount when you complete the H-D Riding Academy New Rider Course
- H.O.G. membership discount for members of the Harley Owners Group
- Homeowner discount for riders who own a home and have homeowners insurance from any company
- Loyalty discount for riders who have Harley-Davidson insurance for more than one year
- Military and law enforcement discount for active or retired military or law enforcement members
- Motorcycle endorsement discount for riders with a motorcycle endorsement on their license
- Multi-cycle discount when you insure more than one motorcycle with Harley-Davidson
- New bike discount for riders with a brand-new motorcycle
- On-time payer discount for making your motorcycle insurance payments on time
Harley-Davidson also has lots of coverage add-ons to help you customize your motorcycle insurance policy. Options include roadside assistance, rental reimbursement coverage, vacation rental coverage and custom equipment coverage.
The main downside to Harley-Davidson insurance is that it doesn't sell car, home or renters insurance policies. If you need to protect another vehicle, your home or your belongings, you'll have to get a policy from a different company. That can be inconvenient, especially if you have a major emergency, like a fire that damages both your home and bike.
Best motorcycle insurance for young riders: Geico
Geico is the best company for young riders. It lets you pay your bill in installments.
Young motorcycle riders on a budget may find this helpful. In comparison, many companies require you to pay your annual rate in full upfront. However, you'll probably have to pay Geico a small fee for each installment.
Geico's motorcycle insurance isn't typically the cheapest option. The average cost of a full coverage policy is $36 per month. That's $3 per month more than the national average. But Geico lets you lower your insurance costs with a wide range of discounts. For example, young riders who take a Motorcycle Safety Foundation or Military Safety Course get a 10% discount.
Geico motorcycle insurance allows riders to customize their coverage to meet their needs. That means policies don't automatically include complex options that young riders may not need. However, it doesn't offer some popular upgrades, like original equipment manufacturer (OEM) coverage.
Best for collectors: Markel
Markel is the top motorcycle insurance company for hobbyists.
Insurance from Markel tends to be expensive. A full coverage policy from Markel costs $39 per month on average. That's $6 more per month than the national average.
However, motorcycle collectors can save money by insuring more than one bike or car with Markel. It also offers a way for safe riders to save money through its vanishing deductible. Markel will reduce your deductible by 25% each year you avoid an accident until it's $0.
Markel insures more motorcycle types than many other companies. It covers:
- Cruisers
- Sport bikes
- Touring motorcycles
- Sport-touring bikes
- Big twins
- Street bikes
- Scooters
- Mopeds
- Dirt bikes
- Trikes
- Custom motorcycles
Markel is also a great choice for bikers with a vintage motorcycle who are having trouble getting coverage elsewhere.
One major drawback is Markel's poor customer support. It gets four times more complaints than an average company its size, according to the NAIC. That means you may have a hard time getting back on the road after a crash.
Best for military riders: USAA
USAA doesn't offer motorcycle insurance directly. It refers its members to Progressive, one of the best companies for motorcycle insurance.
Progressive offers a 5% discount to USAA members, making its coverage even more affordable. On average, a full-coverage Progressive policy costs $22 per month after the USAA discount.
In addition, USAA offers motorcycle loans and financing for up to 100% of the value of your new bike. That makes it a one-stop shop for people looking to buy a new motorcycle.
Besides motorcycles, USAA also sells insurance for ATVs, mopeds and scooters.
Many bikers can't buy USAA motorcycle insurance, though. It's only available to military members, veterans and their families.
Best-rated motorcycle insurance companies
Harley-Davidson is the top-rated insurance company for motorcycles.
That's due to Harley-Davidson's dependable service, affordable quotes and useful coverage options.
Progressive is another highly rated option. It gets fewer complaints than other major insurance companies and offers great rates to most riders.

Choosing a company with reliable customer service is just as important as finding the cheapest rate. Consider Progressive, Nationwide or Allstate motorcycle insurance quotes, since these companies get a low number of complaints.
Great customer service can make the claims process less stressful after an accident. Companies with poor service reviews may take longer to process your claim. You may also end up paying more out of pocket.
